In spring, the coastline comes alive. Autumn brings soft light and peaceful surroundings. During winter, the cycling paths are usually quieter. This variety makes the area ideal for cycling adventures beyond the busy summer season.
Six scenic cycling routes around Burgas

1. Burgas – Poda – Chengene Skele: from nature to fishing traditions
17.5 km ; 119 m total ascent ; difficulty 2/10 ; 0.4 km unpaved ;
This route starts at Burgas Port and passes the Poda protected area before reaching the Chengene Skele fishing village. Along the way, you will enjoy sea views, coastal lagoons and places connected to local fishing traditions. Almost the entire route is paved, making it suitable for city and touring bikes. Take some time to visit the Poda Nature Conservation Centre. Here, you can observe many waterbird species, especially during the migration seasons.
2. Mandra Lake and Uzungeren: quiet roads beside the water
30.8 km ; 231 m total ascent ; difficulty 3/10 ; 5.3 km unpaved ;
This circular route begins at the port and takes cyclists towards the Uzungeren protected area. The landscape feels completely different here. Wide stretches of water, reed beds and peaceful shores create a sense of escape from the city. Some sections follow unpaved roads. Mountain, gravel or hybrid bikes with wider tyres are therefore a better choice. To discover more about the surrounding area, explore our guide to ecotourism and natural attractions near Burgas.

34.2 km ; 221 m total ascent ; difficulty 3/10 ; 8.7 km unpaved ;
One of the most scenic cycling routes near Burgas takes you through the varied landscapes surrounding Atanasovsko Lake. The salt pans, lagoons and open horizons offer wonderful opportunities for photography and birdwatching. The lake lies along the Via Pontica bird migration route. Many migratory birds pass through during spring and autumn. In winter, visitors can also observe wintering waterbirds. The terrain is relatively flat, but the distance and unpaved sections require some preparation.
4. The Avocet Trail: an easy cycling route for beginners
5.6 km ; 43 m total ascent ; difficulty 1/10 ; dedicated cycling paths ;
If you prefer a shorter ride, this route is an excellent choice. It starts near the port and follows cycling paths through the Sea Garden and Ezero Park. The route ends at a birdwatching hide near Atanasovsko Lake. It is suitable for beginners and families. At a relaxed pace, there is plenty of time for photographs and short breaks. The trail is particularly enjoyable on sunny days in late autumn and winter.
5. Rosenets Park: forest trails and sea views
Approximately 7 km one way ; mixed surfaces ; easy to moderate difficulty ;
South of Burgas, Rosenets Park offers a different cycling experience. Instead of open lake landscapes, you will find wooded areas, shaded trails and peaceful places to rest in nature. The route is especially attractive in spring and autumn. However, forest paths can become slippery after prolonged rainfall. A mountain or gravel bike is a more suitable choice for this terrain.
6. Burgas – Kraimorie: a coastal route with important considerations
The cycling connection between Burgas, Poda and Kraimorie has the potential to become one of the most attractive routes south of the city. The project includes a new cycle path and a pedestrian and cycling bridge with panoramic views of the sea and surrounding natural areas.
Before setting off, check the map of your chosen route. It will help you understand the distance, direction and terrain. The published GPS tracks from the Burgas Cycling Community can be used with compatible navigation apps. Even easy cycling routes require some preparation. Check the weather forecast, tyres and brakes before leaving. Bring a helmet, water, lights and a charged phone.
