Most tourists come on vacation to Kraimorie for its cozy beaches. And they leave with the feeling they’ve seen it all. In reality, they have seen almost nothing. Within a one-hour radius by car, curious visitors will find: a city with a centuries-old history, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List; a museum complex with thermal springs, artifacts, and authentic ruins from Roman and Byzantine times; a fishing village unchanged for decades; a protected area sheltering one-quarter of all bird species in Europe ; and a zoo housing more than 650 animals representing over 60 species, in conditions closely resembling their natural environment. If you have rented a villa for a week and plan to spend every day on the sand, this article may change your plans. Consider yourself warned.
1. Chengene Skele — the fishing village where time has stopped

There are places that feel as though the world has forgotten them. Chengene Skele is one of them — and that’s why it’s worth visiting.
This small fishing village lies about three kilometers south of Kraimorie. You can reach it on foot along the coast, prepared for a path past rocks that offers close-up views of various nesting bird species. Or you can go by car in five minutes if you prefer to save your energy for walking through Chengene Skele.
Once you arrive, you will understand why this is the first place on our list. Wooden boats on the shore, nets stretched out to dry, small picturesque houses, and fishermen whose eyes are full of the sea. No noise, no shops, no hustle and bustle.
Interestingly, the area around the settlement is an active archaeological zone. On Cape Chiroza — right between Kraimorie and Chengene Skele — excavations are underway. Stone walls and buildings, remains of mud-brick and ancient tiles, a protective moat, numerous ceramic fragments, and a bronze coin of Apollonia (among other finds) have been discovered. You are literally walking on history.

2. Poda Conservation Center — more than 300 bird species in 10 minutes

Most people pass by the Poda Conservation Center without knowing what it is. They see a lake, reeds, and flying birds — but they continue on their way to the beach. Yet Poda is one of the top 10 ornithological destinations in Bulgaria. The reserve is a wetland protected area of international importance. You literally pass it on the road from Kraimorie to Burgas. Observe the bird diversity from the center’s terrace, walk the visitor trail, and listen to what bird experts will tell you about the 315 species of feathered inhabitants recorded in the area — including rare migratory species that stop here on their journey between Europe and Africa.
You don’t need to be an ornithologist. Stay quiet for five minutes and watch. We guarantee you will encounter birds you probably haven’t seen before. Binoculars are at your disposal, and you can even rent a camera cover to take exciting photos.

3. Burgas — The Ccity that doesn’t feel like a resort (and that’s why it’s interesting)

Burgas is the third most populous city in Bulgaria and offers a wide range of activities during the summer season. While tourists crowd into Nessebar and Sozopol, Burgas enjoys the peaceful life of a real Black Sea city.
The Sea Garden is the perfect place for a walk on both hot days and lively evenings. Stroll along the pedestrian area in the city center, where you will soak up the contagious atmosphere, enjoy the variety of cafes and restaurants, and be pleasantly surprised by the hospitality of the locals. Visit the Regional History Museum, the Peyo Yavorov Regional Library, and the Ethnographic Museum. The Museum of the Impossible and the Planetum Science Center will offer an unforgettable adventure to young and old.
But the true spirit of Burgas is experienced early in the morning. The Krasnodar Market, in the central part of the city, is one of those places tourist guides say nothing about. Fresh fruit, fish from local fishermen, vegetables from nearby villages. If you have rented a villa with a kitchen, a morning shopping trip to Burgas will completely change the culinary experience of your vacation.
The distance from Kraimorie is negligible — bus #17 reaches Burgas South Bus Station directly. Or it’s 10–15 minutes by car.

It lacks the pretentiousness of major European zoos — and that’s exactly why children like it. The enclosures are close together, the animals are easily visible, and the atmosphere is calm. It doesn’t take all day — two or three hours is quite enough. There are petting areas that promise unforgettable emotions and memories for children. *For summer visits, avoid the hottest hours of the day.

Visitors can explore authentic Roman baths from the 1st century, fortress walls, and medieval rooms accessible via constructed walkways. The museum exhibition presents valuable artifacts, and the virtual reality area transports you to the atmosphere of the ancient Roman baths. You will also find an aqua center with a mineral water pool and a cold pool, a sauna, a steam bath, and massages. On the grounds of the complex there is a fountain with mineral water that is freely accessible to visitors, a restaurant, and an amphitheater where various theatrical and musical events are held. The place is ideal for lovers of history and archaeology, as well as for families with children or for those seeking relaxation in a unique atmosphere.

6. Pomorie – Salt and millennia of history

Pomorie offers a unique combination of nature, history, and balneotherapy that distinguishes it from other Black Sea resorts. Lake Pomorie is one of the last natural salt lakes in Bulgaria, and its pink-purple reflections in certain light create an unrealistically beautiful view. In the town itself there is an active mud spa, known for its healing black mud since ancient times. The Salt Museum is the only one of its kind in Eastern Europe and presents authentic salt production using 2,500-year-old technology. There, every visitor can learn about the craft of salt masters and even participate in salt extraction. Be sure to visit the museum and walk around the lake — you won’t regret it.
The old part of Pomorie is an architectural reserve that transports tourists back to the 19th century with its cobbled streets and typical Pomorie houses. These two-story buildings, with stone ground floors and wooden upper floors, were built to withstand the humid marine climate. The ancient domed tomb from the 2nd–3rd centuries is unique in the Balkans for its mushroom-shaped dome and impressive architecture. The Church of the Holy Transfiguration (1763–1764) is the oldest building in the town, with a valuable carved iconostasis and icons from the 16th–18th centuries. Pomorie also attracts tourists with a five-kilometer – long beach of dark sand rich in iron and manganese, which makes it unusually warm and attractive for a seaside vacation.

7. Nessebar — UNESCO Cultural heritage site everyone knows about but few truly understand

The old town of Nessebar is one of the oldest in Europe — founded 3,200 years ago as a Thracian settlement that later became the Hellenic colony of Messambria. Thanks to its convenient ports and strategic location, the town quickly developed into a commercial and cultural center that reached its heyday in the 3rd–2nd centuries BC. Over the centuries, Nessebar passed through Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman rule, with each era leaving lasting traces on its appearance. Today, the peninsula is only 850 meters long and 350 meters wide, and the entire old town has been declared an architectural and historical reserve. Since 1983, Nessebar has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List because of its uniquely preserved monuments and archaeological finds.
Nessebar is often called the “Bulgarian Ravenna” because of its many old churches — according to legend, there were about 40, and today records of 23 of them remain. The Basilica of Saint Sophia (Old Metropolis) is among the most impressive — built in the 5th century, with mosaics and frescoes, it is today a symbol of the city.
The active church The Holy Assumption (Uspenie Bogorodichno) from 1873 is the largest three-nave basilica with a dome and late iconography. In addition to the temples, tourists can also see the authentic Turkish-time windmill on the bridge between the Old and New Towns, as well as the Ethnographic Museum. A walk through the narrow cobbled streets without a concrete plan reveals the true spirit of Nessebar – especially early in the morning, before the numerous crowds. For nature lovers, there are five sand dunes with rare plant species near the city, including a sand lily and a sea wind, which are protected and include the Red Book of Bulgaria.
Old Nessebar is small. You can walk across it in two hours. But those two hours have the potential to be the most memorable of your entire vacation.

8. Sozopol – a true jewel with unique charisma

Sozopol is one of the oldest cities on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. It inherited the site of the ancient Greek colony of Apollonia and combines romance, history, and modern tourism. The heart of Sozopol is the old town, where over 200 Revival-era houses from the 18th–19th centuries create a unique atmosphere with their wooden architecture amid narrow cobbled streets. Must-see sights include the church of Saints Cyril and Methodius, which houses relics of Saint John the Baptist, as well as the small stone chapel of Saints Constantine and Helena, overlooking the sea. The southern fortress wall and the promenade offer a scenic walk between the blue sea and fabulous restaurants. The architectural complex, discovered accidentally when a house was demolished, continues to reveal remarkable historical finds. An ancient well is where tourists throw coins for good luck, and the city museum tells of the ancient history of the region.
Marina Port Sozopol is just five minutes from the old town and offers an impressive view of numerous boats and yachts, as well as peaceful restaurants away from the tourist crowds. The culinary possibilities are countless — the most authentic are the fish and seafood, but grilled and traditional Bulgarian cuisine is also everywhere. Sozopol offers something for everyone — beach bars for young people, quiet alleys for family walks, and peaceful beaches in the surroundings. Just five kilometers from the city, in Ravadinovo, stands the castle “In Love with the Wind” — an attraction worth visiting. Easy transport connections with Burgas and neighboring resorts make Sozopol an excellent base for day trips. Whether you are looking for history, entertainment, or relaxation, this coastal town is a must-visit.

9. Chernomorets
Chernomorets: ~17 km, 15 min
Chernomorets is a small resort town with a unique charm, located on the southern coast of Burgas Bay at the foot of Mount Strandzha. It is easily accessible by both car and bus. The best time to visit is summer — from June to September, when air and sea temperatures are ideal for the beach. The Church of Saint Nicholas, which legend says was built on an ancient sanctuary, is among the must-see attractions. In front of it you will find a paradise park whose variety of flowers and plants will amaze you. Be sure to visit the early Byzantine fortress Akra, located two km from the town ; it is a cultural monument of national importance. Cape Chervenka offers unique rock formations and ideal conditions for diving. Fifty meters from the harbor, on the rocks, stands the iconostasis of Saints Peter and Nicholas (2013), beneath which is carved an image of the Virgin and Child.
The central beach of Chernomorets has clean , shallow water, which makes it suitable for families with children. The picturesque bays near the town attract surfers, kitesurfers, and thrill seekers. Far from the noise of the large resort complexes, Chernomorets combines unique nature with modern tourist services and the warm hospitality of the local people. Traditional summer festivals, musical performances, and outdoor art galleries create an unforgettable artistic atmosphere.
10. Cape Chervenka
Cape ‘Chervenka’ is a protected natural landmark, designated in 1973 for its unique red rock formations. It is located just one km from the center of Chernomorets, eight km from Sozopol, and 26 km from Burgas, making it easily accessible for a day trip. In the immediate vicinity are Gradina campsite beach, the islands of Saints Ivan and Peter, and the remains of the Monastery of Christ the Savior — one of the largest sanctuaries in the region. The peninsula also bears the ancient name Chryso Sotira (“golden salvation”), known among local sailors as the last refuge in strong storms. The cape was part of an early Byzantine city that existed from the 5th to the early 7th century, with a fortress that covered over 73 acres. Commercial and warships once stood ready at its foot to respond to any situation.
In 2019, archaeologists discovered bronze arrows and coins on the cape that predate the first minted money in Apollonia Pontica. This discovery suggests the presence of an ancient temple, probably dedicated to Apollo, as such objects were offered as gifts to the gods. The latest traces of habitation date from the 8th–9th century, when the region was under the rule of both Byzantium and the Bulgarian tsardom. Today, Cape Chervenka offers not only historical wealth but also unique opportunities for snorkeling among the picturesque rocks. The place combines pristine nature, ancient history, and a peaceful atmosphere, far from mass tourism. For anyone who loves adventure and cultural heritage, this is a must-stop along the Black Sea coast.

The biggest mistake in planning a day trip — and how to avoid it
Many people imagine that the more destinations they manage to “check off” in one day, the more fulfilling their vacation will be. This is how the classic mistake is born: Nessebar + Sozopol + Pomorie before noon, then Burgas in the afternoon, and back to Kraimorie in the evening. At the end of this ambitious plan, what remains are the hours spent in the car, only a few places and sights remembered, and finally a feeling of many missed corners.
We allow this because we unconsciously replace the magic of discovery with the logic of a route — distances traveled, sites visited, etc. The Black Sea is not a “tourist marathon.” Experience it slowly and fully, focusing on a maximum of two destinations per day (three if they are very close and you have a car). Memories are not counted in kilometers traveled, but in the minutes during which you felt the place with all your heart and soul.
